A Short Introduction To Showjumping

Showjumping is a well-liked equestrian event with its official beginnings in the early 20th century as a British equestrian event and as an Olympic sport in the games of 1912. The event requires a rider to jump with the horse over various obstacles in a defined course within a preset period of time. Penalties are given for faults. The rider and horse who complete the course in the swiftest time and no faults or with the least number of faults win the event. As well as individual events, there are team competitions also.

Showjumping competitions are awfully challenging for both riders and horses as they test strength, abilities, fast thinking and the bond between thehorse and its rider. Effective communication between the 2 is vital for beating the obstacles. Horses must be strong, with their legs and hooves in the best condition for the jumps. Horses often wear horse boots for leg protection, particularly in training.

Like with any equestrian activity, it is vital to utilize the best and most appropriate clothing for the rider and horse equipment to ensure maximum competitiveness and safety.

Each show has a different course and obstacles. Riders are allowed to walk the course just before the event. Horses can see the course only once. There are roughly 15 to 20 jumps in an arena. These are water jumps, treble bars, parallel rails and artificial stone walls, either individually laid out or in series of doubles and triples.

There are penalties for knocking down a barrier or putting a hoof in the water jump. This costs 4 points. Points are also deducted when a horse refuses a jump (4 points). If the horse refuses a jump twice, then 8 points are deducted. If there's a third refusal, the horse and rider is eliminated. Elimination from the race also results if the rider or horse falls or if the horse refuses a jump for more than 60 seconds. There are time penalties as well for each second over the time allowed for the course. Whoever completes the course with the fewest penalties is the winner.

If there's a tie for the 1st place, the course is modified and a jump-off follows to provide the winner. In the jump-off, time is vital as well as finishing of the course with the fewest penalties. If the penalty count is the same, the winner is the rider who completes the course in the fastest time.

Showjumping events of the highest caliber are the Olympics and the World Equestrian Games ruled by the World Federation for Equestrian Sports. They are both held every 4 years but alternate so that there's an event every 2 years.
