USF's Sara Nevins a nominee for college softball's player of the year (St. Petersburg Times)
**Times staff, wires** Wednesday, May 9, 2012 TAMPA -- USF pitcher Sara Nevins was named one of 11 nominees for the Amateur Softball Association of America's player of the year award. Three finalists will be named May 23, and the winner named May 29. "I didn't expect it at all," Nevins said. "It's cool and exciting." The Pinellas Park High grad is 26-4 with a 1.06 ERA, four saves, three no- hitters and one perfect game. "There are 320 Division I teams. That's a lot of players on each team," said coach Ken Eriksen, whose team opens play in the Big East tournament at 10 this morning in South Bend, Ind., against DePaul. "And for Sara to get recognized by the national governing body … says a lot about what she has done this year against the schedule she has played." Florida senior centerfielder Michelle Moultrie also was nominated.
