How To Deal With Guilt; Experiencing A Lifetime Of Freedom in Only Ten Days!

I’m not a big fan of guilt. It’s annoying! Each time I turn around, something is lurking round the corner that makes me feel guilty. What I eat or should not, how much I exercise – or dont, people which I should have called but didn’t and things I could have completed today but left till tomorrow or later. The list is never ending as is the guilt and I know I am not by myself in what I’m experiencing.

The Baltimore Sun newspaper has assembled an in depth group of articles they’ve written on the guilt people experience, covering everything from mom guilt to survivors guilt that includes people who’ve made it through the current downturn in the economy with their employment still intact and people who have lived through a plane crash when others did not. How to deal with guilt is the base question of a world laden with guilt, because many lives are being ruined by their guilt. Guilt is a horrible thing. Dependent on the root of guilt, the ensuing embarrassment and remorse can make living life rather difficult, even debilitating if it gets overwhelming. There’s no question that a large amount of guilt is self-inflicted based totally on unachievable expectations by by other people or ourselves. We need to figure out how to let go of that kind of guilt, or better yet, not let ourselves own it. But, sometimes guilt is justified when caused by wrong, unethical or illegal behavior. If thats what it is, what are the options we have?

In working out the best way to cope with guilt, you could try and get along with guilt, remind yourself it is in the past and whats done is done and continue on with what is sure to be a less happy life. Or you could attempt to explain or decrease it, referencing 30 different folks you know who’ve done what you probably did or worse, causing you to feel much better in contrast. Or you could spend the rest of your life punishing yourself for it? (Plenty of individuals do this without even realizing it.) If youve done something in your life you really regret, you know these are not wonderful options. Guilt could ruin your life before you achieve relief traveling down one of those roads.

A better choice is to seek leniency from the Person that is truly able to forgive you, God Himself. Guilt is sin and sin is anything contrary to what God would have us think, do or say! So, what that means then is that all sin is directly against God.

King David states in the 51st chapter verse 4 of Psalms when he says against you and you only have I sinned and done that which is evil in your sight he was making reference to the adultery he had committed with Bathsheba and the successive murder of her partner when trying to hide it. Yes, there were people concerned in his sins but most importantly his sins were against God. As a result it was God’s forgiveness that he required.

God forgives and pardons us and thats where the liberty from our guilt comes from. God, when he pardons, completely releases the offender from any further punishment of the offense and He even goes as far as to forget our sin. He can do that because He is God. Now, there still could be consequences from sin that can’t be evaded; cheating on a exam could still result in failing the subject, a unfaithful affair may still result in the marriage breaking up and lying to a boss could mean the end of a career but it does not mean those can’t ever be forgiven or pardoned.

If we have an intimacy with the Lord, through His Son, God guarantees us in I John 19. If we confess our sin He is trustworthy and just to forgive us of our sin and to clean us from all unrighteousness (everything not in conformance to His will in purpose, thought and action). Not only will He clean us but He removes our guilt.

Our world is excellent at managing things we do not know the way to repair. We manage disease and agony and suffering. We try and manage our anxiety and fear and even our guilt. We spend so much wasted energy on handling things that God desires to heal, deliver us from or pardon us of and set us free. Living alongside guilt is not the way your Heavenly Father intends for anybody to live. God paid the ultimate sacrifice possible, the death of His Son Jesus Christ, for your forgiveness and release from guilt. Why then, would He not welcome your request to do so with open arms?
